Description

'Lightning is a pure expression of firebending without aggression. It is not fueled by rage or emotion the way other firebending is. Some call lightning the cold-blooded fire.'

General Info

Name: Opal
Meaning: A gemstone, typically semitransparent and showing a refracting spectrum of colors against a pale background.

Age: 4 years

Gender: Female

Breed: Russian blue

Clan: Fireclan

Rank: Commander

Apprentice: Jackal

Appearance

Opal is a very graceful she-cat. Her pelt is sleek and glimmers like moonlight. Her piercing teal eyes are sometimes enough to discourage enemies during battle. Furthermore, she wears a large human Fire Nation bracelet around the neck. It may seem too tight, but to her, it is a symbol evoking "If this is what I am willing to do to myself, then what am I willing to do to you?"

Bending and Techniques

Level: Firebending [expert], Lightningbending [novice]

Novice
1. Fire Whip: Opal uses her tail to create a sharp, powerful whip of fire that can knock her opponents off their feet.
2. Fire Circle: Opal uses her front paws in a fluid turning motion inspired by waterbending to create a horizontal blazing ring of fire around her upper body and expands it at will when surrounded.
3. Blazing Rings and Arcs: For more evasive targets, Opal sends spinning rings and arcs of fire at high speeds, slicing her target with precision.
4. Blocking Fire: Opal can extinguish the flames of an opponent in a split second. Very useful for insubordinate, rebellious or rioting clanmates and to stop internal clan conflicts.

Advanced
5. Jet Propulsion: Opal tweaked this move to suit her needs. She uses her hind paws to propel her body into a spinning motion, surrounded by a vertical ring of fire and used her tail to send the trailing blast of fire at an enemy before landing on all fours. She also uses this technique to increase her speed on land or to allow her to run on vertical surfaces for short periods of time.
6. Wall of Flames: Instead of the usual wall, Opal tweaked this technique by shielding herself in a sphere of fire.
7. Fire Tunnel: Opal creates a creeping cylinder of flames that engulfs an enemy trying to escape.

Master
8. Lightning generation/redirection: Opal uses her lighningbending only as a last resort or as a defensive reflex to incapacitate an opponent in a blinding flash, sometimes injuring them more than necessary, regretting it every time. She has never really practiced using this technique, making her a novice lightningbender. It is the only technique she cannot fully control, due to a preexisting fear.
She is, however, better at redirecting lightning away from herself or others as a defensive mechanism.

Fighting style:
Opal fights with precise targeted strikes. She tends to use her tail and the curve of her body to send out fire blasts. Her techniques have distinct arcs, circles, spheres and rings style and only in a last resource would she ever resolve to brute strength. Instead, she fights in an almost artistic way, having been trained by a highly respected mentor. He taught her to see firebending as a force with a mind of its own, one that must be respected and tamed with a calm mind. A strike must be graceful, yet lethal. Although Opal uses many novice techniques, she perfected them and increased their power greatly through experience and creativity. She focused on mastering and developing the moves she knew and exploiting them to their fullest before adding a few new techniques to her moveset through the years. Large bursts of flames, explosive attacks and angry lashes are all a waste of energy to Opal. She prefers smaller, quicker, more accurate and controlled pinpoint strikes. As a defense mechanism, when she loses her grip or while being pressured, Opal regrettably uses lightningbending to quickly immobilize her opponent and put an end to the confrontation. She never runs away from a battle, as it is her duty to protect her clan and Fire Lord, but she knows to pick her battles and will refuse confrontation if she deems it is a waste of her time.

Personality

+ : loyal, dedicated, honest, tough, hardworking, reliable, perceptive, protective.

- : brash, resentful, predictable, abrasive, asocial, reactive, rigid.

Neutral: serious, ambitious, reserved.

Fears: weakness, losing her bending, losing control of fire or lightning.

She may seem intimidating at first glance, but her actions have a deeper meaning. To her clanmates, she is an entirely different cat; Opal is proud of them and cares deeply for their happiness. Much like lightning, all traces of aggression leaves her body when she is in the vicinity of Fireclan. She is able to rid her mind of all hatred and fears. Her only desire being the thriving and expansion of her clan. With this in mind, her tasks involves keeping order and discipline, protecting her clanmates at all costs and keeping the name of her clan untainted. Her biggest fear is to appear weak, this is why she seems empowering and stern at all times. Her image allows her to keep order through respect. Although life is tough in Fireclan, she and her Fire Lord must always appear tougher, especially during gatherings and confrontations. She is content within her clanmates, and respects and values each one of them. What bring her the most joy and feelings of fulfillment is seeing them thrive and develop their bending skills. They are what makes Fireclan strong. Opal believes firebending is the purest form of beauty. However, she knows that fire cannot be controlled easily. Neither can lightning. For this reason, she spends most of her free time perfecting her bending and testing her limits alone at the periphery of her territory. Unlike the other forms of bending, which have no potential for destruction and chaos without a bender, fire is a force with a mind of its own. She only rarely uses her lightningbending in public, due to her past 'accident'.

Opal seems to be the go-to cat when it comes to tea. Although most cats pull their tongue out in disgust to this presumed delicacy, which often reminds of a healing poultice, she finds great comfort and peace in this simple drink. She simply adds a tea leaf to a hollowed nut shell, lets it sit for a few minutes and uses her bending to heat it up. It is her preferred trading item.

Fireclan: "I respect my clan above all others. Our flame will never die out. I will make sure of that."
Waterclan: "I must admit that my reluctance to trust these cats is sustained by their advantage in bending. They are our opposites. I mustn't take them lightly."
Airclan: "Peaceful? You mean cowardly? I will never see any honor in a cat who sits around while others fall in battle."
Earthclan: "They are power-hungry and rely on brute strength. I sense the dishonesty of their soul. They must never be trusted."
Antibenders: "How dare you not respect our bending, one which reflects who we are inside. the purity and truth of our soul?"
Nonbenders: "I bow my head to these cats, warriors who push through life without bending abilities. We have grown so accustomed to our gift.
They are stronger than any of us. They have taught me to never take my bending for granted."

Her Story

Before birth to kithood
Opal and her sister were the first and only children of commander Zircon and his loving non-bender mate, Mist. They grew to be an inseparable young couple. Azurite was a bit more mischievous than Opal ever was, but she always dragged her sister in all of her little troubles and adventures using manipulative schemes. Opal didn’t want to be left out anyways, but their mother was never approving of such behavior, as the kits always returned bruised and beaten. The two were very competitive from the day they opened their blue eyes.
Opal was, at first, a very adventurous, bouncy, even carefree kit. Her father was the one to tame such a behavior, which was not acceptable of a potential successor from a long line of commanders. She matured at an early stage in life, giving her a tough facade in adulthood. Zircon would disapprove of any mistakes, any word out of line and any kit-like behavior. He treated both of his kits the same way, but Azurite responded less obediently.  Opal knew that by playing along with Azurite’s rough games, she would become stronger and toughen up, therefore she actively took part in Azurite's games. The two fought with claws unsheathed and kept no chains on their blossoming bending powers, even while practicing with each other. Their father was ever so proud of them, he could see that they would become powerful benders and hoped that one of them would follow his footsteps and become commander after him. In fact, he was an admirable commander, one of the best Fireclan had ever seen. The rest of the clan did not doubt that these kits would inherit the commander’s strength and bravery. Their father hid his concern that the two were too close, that it would become their weakness and that eventually, jealously would break their bond. It would be for them to find out.

Apprentice
Opal's father was able to hand-picked her mentor, due to his high power of influence within the clan and with the Fire Lord. He was quite manipulative, a trait that was passed on to Azurite as well. Those similarities created clashes between Zircon and Opal's sister, distancing the two by creating somewhat of a friction. He did not want Azurite's antics and unruliness to rub off on Opal, and this is partly why he decided to pick a serious mentor for Opal. His chosen mentor was his closest friend. He ensured that the commander's daughter would become worthy of Zircon by molding her into the perfect successor through hard work. He was very strict, and did not allow much creativity or playfulness. Slowly, Opal understood that she could no longer behave like a kit, and that her image had to be serious and her back held straight, if she was to be respected by her clanmates and enemies. He would make her practice the same techniques over and over for days on end. However, as soon as she became a warrior, Opal was quick to develop her own style and adapt to her opponents.
Azurite would often sneak out of camp alone to train without her mentor, but this time wasn’t going to be a typical training session. Opal tagged along, but the two were suddenly halted in their steps when harsh winds began to blow and rain started pouring. Disappointed, both apprentices knew that such weather made it impossible to use their firebending and began to head home. Cracks of thunder shattered the quiet night and Opal leaped without thinking between the lightning to redirect it away from her sister. Both cats were in shock, but Azurite’s eyes were glowing with excitement and a smirk lit her face. “You can lightningbend? And you never told me!” puffed Azurite, forgetting her near death experience. Opal was almost too weak to stand “I…I had no idea. I just had to!” Azurite was so excited about her sister’s new ability that she eagerly requested that she do it again, but Opal was much too inexperienced to contain such a power and lost control. The brightness and ferocity of the bolt blinded Opal, and was directed at her sister. The new lightningbender froze in horror as Azurite’s body laid unconscious, a scent of burnt fur filling her nostrils. Not a scratch was left once Azurite had fully recovered a few weeks later, yet Opal grew distant of her sister, guilt tearing at her insides every time their eyes would meet. She had not even dared to visit the Azurite, once conscious at the healer's den. Guilt-ridden, she would sometimes sneak in while her sister was asleep. Her sister became her weakness. To this day, only in her presence will Opal’s fierce facade break into a twisted emotion of helplessness. Azurite did not seem to hold any resentments towards her sister after that night, and believed that her sister avoided her because she was inferior now that Opal had demonstrated such an ability. From this day on, Azurite would focus on increasing the power of her blows, while Opal strived to perfect her current bending and control it. They would train alone, each of them working harder than ever before to better themselves, in the hope of being worthy of each other’s company again.

Warrior to Deputy
Opal’s sister had a much different approach to firebending. Azurite unleashed anger and hatred with every blow, but her relentless training proved to be rewarding, as she kept growing stronger and stronger. Both she-cats did not go unnoticed by the Firelord, and when the news that their father had fallen in a territory dispute brought a wave of sorrow among their clanmates, he came to them with a remarkable offer. “This may not be the appropriate time to appoint a new commander, but the situation has put me in a difficult position. You were both his daughters and show great potential to fill his position. I know the clan will support my decision. I want to test both of you today.” Shaken by their leader’s words, both young warriors did not think twice before accepting the offer, it is what their father would have wanted. Firelord Smoke led them to the Waterclan border, where their patrols had recently increased and seemed more threatening and daring. As if they knew Fireclan was weakened by the loss of a commander, they dared to test Fireclan's limits. The leader was on the patrol that day. Cryptide and Smoke came face to face, and for a brief moment, the Firelord turned away and locked eyes with both she-cats. It was time to show him what they were made of. The Waterclan patrol flicked their tails and sneered at the three Fireclan cats, refusing to expand Fireclan territory into their own, as Firelord Smoke suspected. They insisted on the fact that it was their own fault if fireclan was burnt bare. “How dare you?” growled Azurite before charging at the Waterclan leader himself. “Azurite, stop!” screeched Opal, forgetting how headstrong and overconfident her sister had always been. The darker she-cat’s eyes were burning with anger, and her judgement was ever so clouded with grief from the sudden loss of their father. Azurite was a ticking timebomb. Opal stood in shock as her sister burst in blue flames, much too close to Firelord Smoke who stepped forward to stop her. Paralysing fear gripped Opal as she stood helpless while her leader was burned by her sister's blasting flames. The Waterclan patrol had vanished, even they knew better than to face this cursed warrior, but Cryptide stood tall. He extinguished her flames with his powerful waterbending and trapped her in ice. Azurite lost consciousness due to exhaustion, and the Waterclan leader was able to assist Firelord Smoke and mutterd
"Do not worry, Fire Lord, the actions of this cat will not affect any views on your clan. She is powerful, and a great aspect to keep in line, however, with that temper of hers, those flames are a curse. Allow them to get out of hand, and it will destroy not only her; but you as well."

The newly discovered unnatural color of her sister’s bending stayed from this day on, and Opal could not get herself to forget the wrath of its power. She feared that Azurite would lose control again, that no cat could ever contain it. She had been unable to fight her sister and protect her Fire lord, yet he had chosen her to be the next commander. "Come forward. I have chosen you to be my new Commander. Understand that I hold no ill will against Azurite. We are Fireclan, and we understand the risks of our element, but I need a Commander with control and discipline." His words rang in her head. Her mistake could not happen again, she swore to herself, although she knew that she could never face her sister in battle. She relied on sticking close to Azurite from then on, to make sure that she was in control. After all, they only had each other now that their father had passed away. The death of her father had been a particular harsh blow to Opal. She had been shaken into a state of shock and did not have time to grieve properly before being thrown into the action, and fulfilling his footsteps. It was a difficult task, but once the vigil had ended, it was like she had been born to be the next commander. Her clan was all that mattered. The fallen cannot be saved.

Relationships

Azurite - Her only littermate. Only in her presence will Opal’s fierce facade break into a twisted emotion of helplessness. She holds her dearly close to her heart and wishes to protect her from her own anger and flames. The blue color of her flames terrifies Opal, but she refuses to show any signs of fear.

Firelord Smoke - Highly respects him. Dedicated her whole life to serving him. Often needs him to hold her back, as she will react too quickly in the face of danger threatening her Firelord.
